Peacocks: Post 2 - On the fence

Border control.

I'm not a massive fan of having fences and walls around my garden. The front garden just has an 8 inch high demarcation of the boundary rather than something that blocks my view. I quite like it that way.

The 6ft tall fence at the side of my house was functional but a bit ugly in my opinion. I decided to take the panels down and stash it all behind my tin shed. Leaving the concrete posts in place. That way if i made a mistake I could always put the fence back up the way it used to be.

Bamboo hedge idea.

I liked the idea of softening the border by having a hedge so that from my own view when in the garden would be more natural than a stark 6ft fence. I've used decorative bamboos for this kind of screening before and its great. It's a light green rather than dark leaf. It stays green all year round. It's easy to prune and cut back and grows bushy from the base rather than just growing at the top and tips. I had experimented previously with willow as well as an indigenous alternative. Willow grows really fast and only ever UP from the topmost branches and tips. So unless you spend your life training it, it tends to be thin and spindly which is not great for providing a thick all-year-round screening. Bamboo does this job brilliantly and it grows reasonably fast. You don't have any issue with cutting it back if you have a lazy year and it gets overgrown. Contrast that with say Leylandii which you can only take back to this years growth or you kill the branch. Barrier between front and side. The previous owner had erected a 3 ft high fence and hedge to separate the side garden from the front garden. Perhaps as a security thing to prevent intruders or more likely to keep a little terrier dog in the side garden without it escaping.

I had no need for this barrier and visually I wanted to have longer views. I wanted to see right out of the side garden and also be able to simply walk around my property with ease. So i took that little fence down and removed the hedge.
