Peacocks: Post 5 - The Birds Escape!
Oops.
The peacocks arrived here at there new home on the 4th Dec 2023. In time for the darkest, wettest most horrible part of the year.
Also my back yard was in such a sorry state I was feeling really bad about their new environment. The rain lashed and the wind howled and they sat inside the aviary for days at a time on their perch looking ... glum.
The sorry state of things was so far removed from my dream of peacocks roaming on lush lawns. I desperately wanted to let them out to enjoy the wide-open green space at the front of the house and across the road toward the forest. Anyhow. During this time of madness, on one particular sunny January day (which I think was between 15th Jan and 26th Jan 2024) I experimented with letting them venture out a little in to the yard. Hopefully they would be easy enough to round up. I let them wander out by themselves and explore the immediate vicinity of the back yard and front garden. Utterly mad and foolish of me. It was just such a nice, sunny, bright January day and I was feeling lucky! I wasn't lucky. A neighbour walking his two little terrier hounds rounded the path and the barking scattered the pair of birds into the housing estate -- which was a total surprise to me as I had assumed they would naturally head towards the open greenery. They actually headed for the stairwell of the hire-rise flats in the distance. The pair of them were well and truly released! They were not coming back. My friend kept me abreast of all the reports going round social media group-chat for the housing estate about the two peacocks at large. The hen eventually got captured by a lady who gave it to a farmer. The male was last seen down at Newforge Lane in the forest.
It was a bitter episode.
Total failure.
